Handheld Doppler devices are primarily used in burns surgery to assess blood flow in tissues, guide the planning of perforator-based flaps, and assist in the evaluation of tissue perfusion, especially pre-operatively for reconstructive procedures involving burn scars. 

Handheld Doppler is often used to map the location of perforator vessels before surgery for burn scar contractures and reconstructive procedures.

Handheld Doppler, though more limited than advanced modalities like laser Doppler, provides point assessment of blood flow and can help detect areas of compromised perfusion in burn wounds.

This is particularly helpful in planning surgical interventions, identifying viable tissue for grafting, or confirming the adequacy of blood flow in flaps post-operatively.
